I think microphone is the most underestimated piece of gear by many guitar players. You can have top of the line amp and cabinet, and wall of racks, but if you have shitty mic at the end, this all will sound like a shit ;) At one venue they provide you one mic, at another venue they provide different mic, and each time you sound different. Having your own mic makes you independent and you will always sound same.
I am using legendary Shure SM57 and Sennheiser e609. Maybe these mics are not most expensive, but for sure most popular and The Best. Just "go with the flow" and buy what everybody else is buying ;)
Placement of the mic is individual, but I can tell you how I am using mine:
Sennheiser e609: 10 o'clock on the outside edge of speaker and almost touching grill cloth.
Shure SM57: 3 o'clock, half way from center and about 5 inches away from cabinet.
